In “We-Can-Ville” all the streets are laced with glimmering lights, beautifully architecturally designed buildings, and world-class landscapes. However, most all the major traffic corridors in and out of the town are paved with disappointment. Although there is continuous frolic, festivities, and delightful conversations between town citizens, the fact remains that there is rarely a mutually beneficial outcome. There are many offers made, but few acceptances. You see, “We-Can-Ville” is full of strangers who only engage in casual conversations.
There are customs and practices that people avoid taking the time to get to know each other for the purpose of developing lasting relationships. Developing lasting relationships takes time, effort, and of course the possibility of rejection and/or disappointment. The folks in“We-Can-Ville” much prefer to be hunched over their cell phones and iPads, while sitting in the beautiful tree-lined parks enjoying quiet solitude. Yes, they are ever-ready to keep in touch or respond to messages digitally while sipping their caramel flavored coffee in environmentally sensitive recycled paper cups.
A prospective solicitation goes as follows: “Hello Mr. Smith, nice to meet you! You see, Mr. Smith, we can sell you this new thing, or we can provide this better service. It will benefit you. Will you accept my offer?” Hollow noise usually follows!
Many salespeople do not consider the fact that business done in almost all cases done with relationships that grow over time. Consequently, the more relationships that one develops, the higher the possibility of a successful business-related outcome will naturally occur. A side note is also the more positive relationships a person develops the more happiness and fulfillment will be the result in his/her personal life.
Why do so many salespersons fail to understand that the successful result of a sales effort is not about some random solicitation process, but rather about developing lasting relationships? Lasting and established relationships who like and trust one another and to do business with each other. A new acquaintance on an immediate and spontaneous basis, just prior to a request or solicitation rarely ends in success.
