The Hi De Ho King of Swing and Harlem Royalty

Cab Calloway (1907–1994) was one of the most charismatic, high‑energy performers of the Swing Era—a singer, bandleader, and showman whose flamboyant style made him a central figure of Harlem’s legendary Cotton Club and a significant force in American popular music.

Born in Rochester, New York, and raised in Baltimore, Calloway developed his musical craft on the jazz circuits of Chicago before breaking out nationally in the early 1930s.  His big break came when he replaced Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club, where his thrilling stage presence, scat‑singing prowess, and sharp white tuxedos electrified audiences.  His signature hit, “Minnie the Moocher” (1931), with its infectious “hi‑de‑ho” call‑and‑response, became one of the most recognizable songs of the era and an enduring part of American cultural memory.

Calloway’s orchestra stood among the finest of its time, featuring towering talents such as Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Hinton, and Ben Webster. The band was celebrated for its tight arrangements, driving rhythm, and electric showmanship.  This combination made Calloway a staple of radio broadcasts, film shorts, and national tours.  His playful yet virtuosic approach to scat singing influenced countless artists and helped bring jazz vocals into the mainstream.

Beyond music, Calloway became famous for his dynamic personality and unmistakable style.   “Hepster’s Dictionary” (1938), a glossary of African American jazz slang, was the first published dictionary of jive talk and a cultural milestone that captured the vibrant language of the Swing Era.

Calloway continued performing for decades, reemerging in the public eye with a memorable appearance in The Blues Brothers (1980), which introduced his music to new generations.  His longevity, versatility, and unmistakable flair cemented him as an icon of American entertainment.

Cab Calloway remains a symbol of the exuberant heart of swing—an artist whose voice, style, and personality helped define the sound and spirit of early jazz.  His legacy lives on in both the music he recorded and the joyous, high‑flying showmanship he brought to every stage.
